Break Free can upset apple cart in Vo Rogue Plate

Group 1 winner Matt Hoysted can upset the apple cart for a stack of Magic Millions 3YO Guineas hopefuls with his unbeaten filly Break Free at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) shapes as a major Magic Millions 3YO Guineas lead-up, however the $3m race is the furthest thing from Hoysted’s mind with his Inglis purchase, who is ineligible for it.

After trialling at Doomben on Monday morning, Hoysted said Saturday’s Vo Rogue would be the end of the road this summer for Break Free – however, he has bigger plans next year.

“It was a gap between runs and going up in trip that made me want to trial, I was a bit in two minds, but with all the rain we had last week, we have had no grass and the tracks were wet,” Hoysted said.

“We thought we’d wait and she can have a spin around at the trials instead.

“We got her at the Inglis sales, so there won’t be any Magic Millions for her, she will have this run and go to the paddock.”

Break Free has won her two career starts at the Sunshine Coast and Grafton at long odds-on quotes, with Saturday’s race easily the most difficult she has turned up in.

Connections considered aiming up at the 1100m $3m Sunlight slot race next Saturday at the Gold Coast, however the depth of the race was enough for Hoysted to instead look to the future.

“We got asked about the Sunlight, so we had a good think about it, but we always felt that once she gets to 1200m and 1400m, that’s where she could come into her own.

“She is a big striding filly, so we are hoping the 1300m on the big track can be the logical option, it is all still her first racing prep, so she is giving away a bit of experience to the other horses.

“She is a classy filly and whatever she does, she will only improve on.

“When you see how Arabian Summer won the other night and then Lady Of Camelot is coming up for that race too, I think we made the right call.

“After two runs, she is looking for a bit further, a sharp 1100m around the Gold Coast probably wasn’t going to be great for her.”

She is still in markets for The Sunlight and is considered a $26 chance.
